Pros: Very quiet, hot water, cute backyard with a couple hammocks, friendly and knowledgeable owner
Cons: Not a lot of young people, kitchen closes early
Notes: Located in Sabana, not very close to the centre of San José

Pros: Incredible view, beer and other beverages for sale, lots of young people, hammocks, friendly staff, shared kitchen facilities
Cons: At the top of a huge hill (long walk to Quepos, the nearest town), bad coffee, loud ceiling fans, lots of bugs, no hot water

Pros: private rooms, hot water (well, warm at least…)
Cons: too expensive, no kitchen, doors that would not open, no common area for guests, unfriendly owner, have to wake up owner to be let in main gates
Notes: Definitely only as a last resort…many other options.

Pros: downtown, shared kitchen facilities, lots of common areas
Cons: no hot water, lots of mosquitoes, sometimes there is a funky smell…
Notes: Make sure you ask for sheets! We slept one night without them…

Pros: Clean, quiet, adorable dogs, helpful owner, hot water
Cons: Slightly harder to find than the several other hostels on the way, slightly boring
Notes: Definitely not a party town or a party hostel, but the staff was down to play drinking games.

Pros: Party hostel, cool atmosphere, beach front property, hostel bar with drinking competitions and drink specials, free pipa (coconut water) upon arrival, comfortable beds, hot water, free shuttle from the bus stop, bike rental, large lockers, many bathrooms and showers
Cons: Far from the main strip, sketchy-looking and slightly dirty dorms, loud at night
Notes: Towel rental available.

Price: $10/night for a room with 2 double beds
Breakfast included: No

Pros: Clean, air conditioned, restaurant/bar on site
Cons: No hot water, very near the main road (so it can be noisy), far from grocery store and restaurants, no Wi-Fi, TV doesn’t turn on
Notes: One of the only places in La Virgen/Puerto Viejo where you can check in late (past 8 p.m.)

Pros: Close to the bus stop and the main strip, beach front
Cons: Kitchen closes at 8 p.m., crabs in the showers, not the cleanest, not the most helpful owners
Notes: Everything books up fast in Montezuma, so reserve hostels in advance or you could get stuck paying for an expensive hotel.
